Propecia – commonly asked questions
Is Propecia a hormonal medication?
No. Propecia is not a hormonal drug. Contrary to hormones, Propecia (finasteride) does not bing to receptors and does not compete with the hormones. Many people mistakenly consider that Propecia suppresses the production and release of testosterone. However, it is only a delusion. Propecia works only by selectively inhibiting (suppressing) the activity of the enzyme 5-?-reductase which converts testosterone into more active 5-?-dehydrotestosterone. Clinica data shows the Propecia does not decrease the amount of free testosterone and sometimes even increases testosterone blood levels by 10 and more percentages.
Which forms of hair loss does Propecia treat?
Propecia is indicated only for the treatment of male pattern baldness. Such kind of hair loss is observed in nearly 95% of patients. The medication is not intended for use against other forms of hair loss like alopecia areata, stress-inducing alopecia or hair loss caused by vitamins and nutrient substances.
What can I expect from Propecia?
According to the results of clinical application Propecia helps to prevent hair loss in nearly 86% of patients, in 65% of cases Propecia significantly increases hair growth.
