Is Propecia a hormonal medication?
No. Propecia is not a hormonal drug. Contrary to hormones, Propecia (finasteride) does not bing to receptors and does not compete with the hormones. Many people mistakenly consider that Propecia suppresses the production and release of testosterone. However, it is only a delusion. Propecia works only by selectively inhibiting (suppressing) the activity of the enzyme 5-?-reductase which converts testosterone into more active 5-?-dehydrotestosterone. Clinica data shows the Propecia does not decrease the amount of free testosterone and sometimes even increases testosterone blood levels by 10 and more percentages.
